Everyone has an original idea, a creative concept, compressed in maximum 15 minutes animation. Most of them are awarded or nominated for the Oscar Academy Awards. If you don’t have time to watch all at once, consider bookmarking the article. Some of them are funny, others came with an unexpected final, others impressed in animation and storytelling but all have huge emotional impact on the viewer.

Here’s my list of 20 Best Animated Short Films. Share your favourite one in the comments area.

1. The Lost Thing

A boy finds a strange creature on a beach, and decides to find a home for it in a world where everyone believes there are far more important things to pay attention to. Won 2011 Oscar Best Animated Short Film.

2. Logorama

Police chase an armed criminal in a version of Los Angeles comprised entirely of corporate logos. Won 2010 Oscar Best Animated Short Film.

3. Day & Night

The personifications of daytime and nighttime learn to get along.

4. Oktapodi

Two Octopi fight for their lives with a stubborn restaurant cook in a comical escape through the streets of a small Greek village.

5. Get Out

6. For the Birds

A group of snooty birds roosting on a telephone wire get their just desserts when a goofy bird drops in. Won 2002 Oscar Best Animated Short Film.

7. Fallen Art

In an old forgotten military base far from civilization, a group of deranged military officers nurture their insanity.

8. Presto

A stage magician’s rabbit gets into a magical onstage brawl against his neglectful guardian with two magic hats.

9. In the Head

Antoine Bertrand, a young man, leaves his girlfriend Anna, to enroll in the army. A day of conflict, this one draws a bullet in the head. Antoine will then arrive at the gates of Paradise.

10. The Chubbchubbs!

A janitor at an alien night-club gets his wish to be a singer. Won 2003 Oscar Best Animated Short Film.

11. One Man Band

Two buskers engage in a petty feud over a child’s donation.

12. Replay

In a world destroyed by the human kind, the only glimmer of hope is the memory of a forgotten past.

13. Partly Cloudy

Everyone knows that the stork delivers babies, but where do the storks get the babies from? The answer lies up in the stratosphere, where cloud people sculpt babies from clouds and bring them to life.

14. Alarm

Alarm is an animation directed for Jang Moo-hyun from the independent team of MESAI.

15. Sebastian’s Voodoo

A voodoo doll must find the courage to save his friends from being pinned to death.

16. The Passenger

A one-man project created between 1998-2006.

17. Lifted

A teenage alien tries to abduct a sleeping human, but with so many switches to do so, it’s nearly impossible.

18. Granny O’Grimm’s Sleeping Beauty

Granny O’Grimm, a seemingly sweet old lady, loses the plot as she tells her version of Sleeping Beauty to her terrified Granddaughter.

19. This Way Up

A.T Shank & Son have a bad day at the parlour when a falling boulder flattens their hearse. Emotional and literal pitfalls lie in wait for the odd couple as they make their way cross country with just a coffin for company.

20. The House of Small Cubes

As his town is flooded by water, an old man is forced to add additional levels onto his home with bricks (cubes) in order to stay dry.

How to use it

1. Download the 3D Image Rotator Carousel AS2 and put all the files in the same directory. Now to insert the SWF file inside the HTML page(s) of your website copy / paste the following code in your HTML page(s) and adjust the param and other values with your own values:

where:

#version=8,0,0,0 -> represents the minimum required Flash, can be 8, 9 etc.
yourSWFWidth -> a numeric value in pixels representing the width of your movie
yourSWFHeight -> a numeric value in pixels representing the height of your movie
yourSWFName -> represents the SWF file name (without the .swf extension)
yourSWFURL -> represents the URL location to the SWF file on your sever (eg: http://www.mysite.com/myflashfolder/myMovie.swf )

For using JavaScript integration follow the second part of this tutorial.

2. To configure your carousel open up the config.xml file and adjust the parameters according to your needs. You can setup the carousel radius, the image logo, the object mirror to be visible or not, the carousel angles and much more. To add a new image to the carousel use the following code:

3. If you want to specify a different XML configuration filename you can use FlashVars. Edit the HTML source file and go to the tag where your SWF resides and add the following code to the object tag:

Make sure you to add the FlashVars=”xmlFile=myXMLFile.xml” also to the < embed > tag.

If you want to use the 3d carousel in a Flash project (FLA file needed) check out the commercial version available at FlashTuning.net.

License

You are free to use the files inside the 3DRotateCarouselAS2_Free.zip in any project personal / commercial as long as you don’t try to hide Flashtuning logo located in the top left corner of the gallery. If you don’t want to have the logo, you must purchase the commercial package that is available on Flashtuning.net.
