Most iPhone application websites have a similar design, usually a cool image or a video to show people how the app works.  However, there are also some site designs that really catch your eye. Whether it’s the color, the slick typography, or the navigation, these sites are visually appealing. Coolest iPhone App Sites

1. The Cocktail App

This presentations sites welcomes you with a colorful and delicious image of a cocktail. The design is simple, and so is the typography used. The blocks of text are separated by small images that explain the process of making a great cocktail.

2. Flight Card App

Simple design to make the concept easy to explain to any user that visits the site. Actually for such a cool idea, there was no need to create a complex design for this presentation iPhone site.

3. Meridian Apps

Nice slideshow intro that describes the top 5 benefits of getting this app, used primarely to save up space. The typhography and colors are minimal, yet effective.

4. Banca Currency converter app

Good landing page for a currency converter iPhone app. Includes information about the product, as well two buttons that redirect to a video and screenshots of the iPhone app. It’s a practical use of the little space available.

5. HiFutureSelf App 

Excellent use of visual elements to explain what the app does, and how to use it. And all that with two images of an iPhone and two lines of text.

6. Lo-Mob app

Given that this is an iPhone app that one can use to give a retro look to his photos, most of the space on the site is taken over by a showcase of images with a retro effect.

7. Momento App

The site is designed in relation to the specific of the iPhone app – plenty of content with some images that explain how it works. Maybe the background isn’t the best choice, but other than that, it makes a good presentation site for an iPhone application.

8. Mee Templates

Three iPhones with changing themes every 2 seconds. You could easily guess what this iPhone app site is all about. Good use of space with scroll-down content on the right side of the page. Overall, a good looking iPhone site design.

9. Marketcircle

This design is actually similar with the previous one, minus the content. They used images of the iPhone to show how the app works and added a video icon close to it, where users can find out more about the app.

10. Ecoki iPhone Reader

Cool design for an eco iPhone reader. Every element of design on this page says “eco”, especially the colors and the background image, which is pretty stunning, if you ask me.

11. TimeTuner app

Simple design for an iPhone app site that uses a background image and an iPhone to explain in few words what the app is for.

12. Gas Cubby App

Colorful iPhone app site that presents an app that can help users track their gas mileage. Maybe the design could’ve been a bit better, but the colors catch the eye.

13. Get Concentrating app

The colors used on this site are a definite attraction, and go hand-in-hand with the concept of the iPhone application that they’re promoting.  On the same note, the typography and the images also help a lot. However, I would’ve made the two buttons more obvious.

14. WordPress for iPhone

I actually wouldn’t have imagined the WordPress for iPhone site looking any different than it does now. It uses an image to show you how WP will look on your iPhone device.

15. Movies Now app

Amazing design for an iPhone app site that can be used to get movie tickets on the go. The design elements are very attractive, as well as the background image that’s in accordance to the main benefit of the app.

However, how many of the websites that we’re visiting daily have a version that’s designed for mobile devices? Imagine how frustrating it is to access the desktop version of a website with a mobile device. It’s difficult to get around, find the information we need or worse, we can’t even access the site at all.

Designing for mobile devices is all about simplicity, considering that users need to find information easy and now! You have to make the best of the little space you have available. While having an attractive design is ok, making your site user-friendly should be your main focus. So, test it and test it again on multiple devices to make sure it’s displaying correctly.

Now that you see how important it is to have a version of your site on the go, here are some things you should take into account when designing a website for mobile devices:

Get a separate site for mobile

This is actually the first dilemma that comes up: should you convert your already existing site or create a new one from scratch? It’s actually recommended to use a sub domain of your main site. This way you can see exactly what your visitors see and optimize it specifically for mobile users.

Get to know your users

Before deciding upon the most important areas that you have to include in the mobile version, conduct a test and gather some information from your visitors. They’re the ones spending time on your site so you need to listen carefully and find out what information they’re looking for. This way you can give them an easy access to the areas they like the most and hide the ones they’re not interested in. You don’t need to waste their time and your space with unnecessary content. Then you can start designing the interface so that your users can navigate easily and quickly through your site.

Keep it simple

This is not the place to overdo it when it comes to design elements. Your mobile design should be as simple as possible as it will make it more efficient. You don’t want your visitors leaving your site after 3 seconds because they find it hard to navigate through the content or can’t find what they’re looking for.
Use a simple page structure that includes the 3 basic elements: header with your logo, body with a summary of a post and footer, with some basic info about your site. Avoid including any graphic elements just to make it look prettier. Having an attractive design is not relevant here, but having one that is easy to navigate through. Focus on its functionality rather than on its looks.

Optimize the navigation

You’re designing an interface for mobile devices, so keep that in mind at all times. For touchscreen devices, pay greater attention to increasing the clickable areas, such as links, buttons, so users don’t have to zoom in constantly. However, you can go for a navigation design specifically optimized for mobile devices.

Remove unnecessary content

Remember the tests at the beginning? Use the results to determine what content is important and what content your visitor can live without. Include as much content as you can, but don’t overdo it, otherwise your visitors will have a hard time finding their way around.

Limit the number of images

You can use icons and images that are relevant to the content included on the site. Including images is important, but only if you’re trying to make a point. However, don’t include an image if you can very well do without it, especially since sometimes it might look bad at a certain resolution.

Test, test, test

After you finished the design and the implementation, test it on multiple devices to see how it looks and moves. And don’t test it just once, but constantly. This way you can see exactly what your visitors are seeing and make changes when something isn’t displaying correctly. By testing it continuously you’ll be able to make it run efficiently.

The upgraded version of Adobe Flash will allow you to build stand-alone applications for iPhone and iPod using AS3. Through these new features you can use in your development every AIR 2.0 and Flash Player 10.1 APIs available at the moment. Flash Player 10.1 will be available on almost every mobile platform (such as Android,Blackberry etc, not to mention the desktop OS), but I’m guessing that is a matter of time until it will be on iPhones as well, especially with the beta release of CS5 by the end of the year.

A thing you should consider is that the standalone applications build will be native iPhone apps, not the usual swf that we run in the browser. That’s because the final result, the swf file, is compiled using the Low Level Virtual Machine (LLVM). This compiler has flexibility and applicability to iPhone development. Thus the result is a native iPhone application.
